Dig your own pink and green California tourmalines from the world's most famous tourmaline mine, the Himalaya Mine near beautiful Lake Henshaw in San Diego County, 20 miles east of Pala. Over 200,000 lbs. produced since 1898 including quartz crystals, lepidolite, topaz, morganite, and other pegmatite minerals. You can visit us and dig your own Himalaya Mine tourmaline ore at the Lake Henshaw Resort, which is adjacent to the Himalaya Mine. We have brought dump truck loads of tourmaline bearing ore down the hill to allow easier access for the public. For those adventurous people that want to tour an active tourmaline mine, we are offering a mine tour which will begin at the Lake Henshaw Resort. The prices for all you can dig gem screening is $75 per person per day. The cost touring an active tourmaline mine is an additional $20 per person. Buckets of very high grade gem pocket ore are available from our very rich area which can be taken home for screening are $50 each and there will be extra special $100 buckets as well. Faceted tourmalines are also available for purchase. We will have all tools available for loan on site, but if you want to bring your own equipment you can (shovel, rubber gloves, muddy shoes, hat, bag for tourmaline, bucket, 1/4 inch wire mesh 10”x12” screen - note picture). Our hours of operation are year round from 10am to 3pm, Thursday - Monday (closed on Tuesday and Wednesday). Reservations are not required, just show up. Santa Ysabel, CA which is located at the junction of hwy 79 & hwy 78. Lake Henshaw Resort is on hwy 76, four miles west of the junction of hwy 76 and hwy 79. Lake Henshaw Resort has accommodations (cabins, RV parking, and camping), for reservations call 760-782-3501. Also, there is a restaurant at Lake Henshaw Resort with a variety of delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner available, and they offer a special discount off meal purchase for folks who purchase a mine dig. Also, there are several motels in Julian, CA. San Diego International is the largest nearby airport.
